A New Hymn: “Father, Almighty”

A few weeks ago while meditating on this verse…

“For where your treasure us, there your heart will be also.” — Matthew 6:21

I was inspired to write the hymn you see below. The lyrics could probably use a bit more polish, but I like the Old English approach.

I place a high value on hymns. Good hymns arise from Scripture, are theologically rich, and teach the singer that we are part of something bigger and grander than our immediate experiences.

Whether this is a good hymn or not, I’ll let others judge. As for music, I have a tune in my head, but a real song writer, like Laura Story, would do such a better job than me. Laura? Laura?

verse 1:

Father, Almighty, Thou Fountain of grace,
Redeem and embrace us. May we see Thy face
Shining in blessing, bright to behold,
No shadow of anger, but mercies untold.

verse 2:

Father, Almighty, Thou Maker of peace,
Through Christ’s body broken our enmities cease
that all may be one in Christ, all in all,
Who brings us before Thee, repairing our fall.

refrain:

Almighty, Father, Almighty
Crown of Glory burning bright
None be like Thee, Father Almighty
Heav’nly Treasure, our heart’s delight!

verse 3:

Father, Almighty, Thou Treasure of above,
Precious perfection! True object of love.
In Christ none are orphaned; we need not despair —
Thou, our inheritance! We, Thy true heirs.

verse 4:

Father, Almighty, Thou Lover of souls,
Thine be the glory for making us whole,
Holy and blameless to stand at Thy throne.
We praise and adore Thee, all honor, all glory
Be thine, the Almighty. Yes, Thine alone.

refrain:

Almighty, Father, Almighty
Crown of Glory burning bright
None be like Thee, Father Almighty
Heav’nly Treasure, our heart’s delight!
